Dream ya Kutoka Kwa Block – Buruklyn Boys

Dream ya kutoka kwa block. This is not only the refrain of the Kenyan duo drill superstars’ hit song but also the hope of many people, young and old. Male and female. The literal meaning of block may vary from one person to another but the bottom line is that it is financial freedom. We spend lots of hours weekly in pursuit of money so that we may get out of the hood, wherever that may be for you, but that may prove to be a daunting task in this unforgiving world.

Ajay acknowledges that it is an uphill task to get out of the hood but just like many of us the dream to get rich and get out of the hood remains unchanged. There are moments when I, perhaps you too, question if I am going to make a successful story and get a rich ending. The fact that 99% of effort is wasted doesn’t help things either.

Largely or so you don’t know where to start or how to start and for those who do the path seems thorny and impassable. You imagine how best you can put your plans into action. The ideas seem vague and out of touch with reality, and when you do pitch your ideas to the world, in the lyrics of Ajay, society thinks you are fumbling. That your ideas are not feasible. Those who drop their ideas at this slightest provocation, and sure they are many of them, remain stuck in the block pushing to the back their dream. Still, those who go ahead and follow their plan may or may not get out of the block. Such is the harsh reality of the streets.

The lyrics to the song Dream ya kutoka kwa block aim to entrench in us the ultimate dream. That we cannot afford to despair without getting what we want from this world. We should though remain cognizant that it will not be handed to us outrightly free. We have to toil. Work hard for it. There is nothing for nothing.

Your path may be filled with thorns, rocks and all manner of things rendering it almost impassable but with your head held high, your sight on the dream nothing is impossible. As Mr. Right quips “lately me hutrace manoti, Maisha yangu naachia Sagodi’’ in the same manner, do your thing persistently and consistently and leave the rest to the universe. The universe requires sacrifice. Provide, and it will reward tenfold. You can do anything you want to get out of the block, the world’s your oyster.
